Goals Tutorial
Build consistency with practice goals. Set weekly targets, track progress, and use makeup sessions to stay on track.
What Are Practice Goals?
Practice Goals help you build consistency by setting structured weekly targets. Instead of vague intentions like "practice more," you create specific, measurable commitments.
Example Goal: Practice scales for 20 minutes, 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
The app tracks whether you complete your sessions on the scheduled days and celebrates when you hit your weekly target.
How to Create a Goal
- Tap the Goals tab
- Tap "Create New Goal"
- Choose your practice type (Scales, Songs, Technique, etc.)
- Set a weekly target (how many days per week you'll practice)
- Select which specific days of the week to practice
- Set your session duration (minimum time per session)
- Optionally enable the metronome for that goal
- Tap "Create Goal"
Your goal will appear on the Goals page with progress tracking for the current week.
Free vs Premium Goals
Free Version
- 1 active goal at a time
- Basic progress tracking
- Weekly reset on Mondays
Premium Version
- Unlimited active goals
- Advanced progress tracking with streak history
- Makeup Sessions feature (see below)
- Goal templates for quick setup
How Goal Tracking Works
Goals track your practice sessions automatically when you use the Timer or Quick Start timer.
Counting Sessions Toward Goals
A practice session counts toward a goal if:
- Duration: Session length meets or exceeds the goal's minimum time
- Practice Type: Session practice type matches the goal's type
- Day: Session occurs on one of the goal's scheduled days
Example: If your goal is "Scales, 20 min, Mon/Wed/Fri" and you practice scales for 25 minutes on Monday, that session counts toward your weekly target.
Weekly Progress
Your goal card shows:
- Current week's completed sessions vs target (e.g., "2/3 days complete")
- Progress bar showing percentage complete
- Upcoming scheduled days highlighted
- Celebration animation when you hit your weekly target
Makeup Sessions (Premium)
Life happens. Makeup Sessions let you stay on track even when you miss a scheduled practice day.
How Makeup Sessions Work
If you miss a scheduled day, you can "make up" that session by practicing on an unscheduled day within the same week.
Example:
- Goal: Practice Mon/Wed/Fri
- You miss Monday
- You practice on Tuesday instead (an unscheduled day)
- That Tuesday session counts as a makeup for Monday
- Your weekly progress still shows 3/3 days complete
Makeup Rules
- Makeup sessions must occur in the same week as the missed day
- Must meet the goal's duration requirement
- Must match the goal's practice type
- Cannot "bank" makeup sessions for future weeks
- The app automatically applies makeup sessions to the earliest missed day
Goal Streaks
Streaks track how many consecutive weeks you've hit your goal target.
Building Streaks
- Current Streak: Weeks in a row you've met your target
- Best Streak: Your longest streak ever for this goal
- Weekly Reset: Streaks reset on Monday at 12:00 AM
Premium users can see detailed streak history showing exactly which weeks they hit their targets.
Metronome Integration
You can enable the metronome for specific goals. When you start a timer session for that goal, the metronome automatically launches with your saved settings.
Setting Up Metronome for a Goal
- When creating or editing a goal, toggle "Enable Metronome"
- Set your preferred tempo (BPM)
- Choose time signature
- Select sound type
- Save the goal
Now when you practice for that goal, the metronome starts automatically with those settings. Perfect for technique work that requires consistent tempo.
Editing and Deleting Goals
Editing an Active Goal
- Tap the goal card on the Goals page
- Tap "Edit Goal"
- Change any settings (days, duration, practice type, etc.)
- Tap "Save"
Note: Editing a goal doesn't affect past progress. Changes only apply to future weeks.
Deleting a Goal
Deleting a goal removes it from your Goals page and stops tracking progress. Past statistics remain in your practice history.
- Tap the goal card
- Tap "Edit Goal"
- Scroll to bottom and tap "Delete Goal"
- Confirm deletion
Tips for Successful Goals
Start Small
It's better to consistently hit a modest goal (15 minutes, 2 days/week) than to constantly miss an ambitious one (60 minutes, 6 days/week). Build momentum with achievable targets, then increase gradually.
Be Specific: "Practice scales" is more actionable than "Get better at guitar"
Match Your Schedule: Choose days you realistically have time, not ideal days
Mix Practice Types: Premium users can create multiple goals for different skills (scales, songs, ear training, etc.)
Use Makeup Sessions Wisely: They're for legitimate schedule conflicts, not procrastination. Practicing on your scheduled days builds better habits.
Troubleshooting
My session didn't count toward my goal?
Check these requirements:
- Did the session meet the minimum duration?
- Did you select the correct practice type in the Timer?
- Did you practice on a scheduled day for that goal?
- Did you complete the session (not discard it)?
Tip: You can view which practice type you selected in your session history.
Can I change the week start day?
Currently, all goals reset on Monday at 12:00 AM. Custom week start days aren't available yet, but we're considering this feature for future updates.
What happens to my goal when the week ends?
At 12:00 AM Monday:
- If you met your target: streak increases by 1
- If you didn't meet your target: streak resets to 0
- Progress resets to 0/X for the new week
- The goal remains active and continues tracking
Can I pause a goal temporarily?
There's no pause feature, but you can delete the goal and recreate it later when you're ready. Your past practice history is preserved even if you delete a goal.
