Practice Timer Tutorial
Master the practice timer to track every session with presets, custom durations, and background tracking.
What are Timer Presets?
Timer Presets are quick-start buttons that let you begin a practice session instantly without any setup.
Free Version
Four preset options:
- 5 minutes
- 10 minutes
- 15 minutes
- 20 minutes
Custom Timer Presets (Premium)
Premium members can create personalized timer presets with custom durations and practice type labels.
- Go to Settings → Timer Presets
- Tap "Add Preset"
- Set your duration (e.g., 25 minutes)
- Add a custom label (e.g., "Warmup Routine")
- Tap Save
Your custom presets will appear alongside the default options on the Timer page, making it easy to start your most common practice sessions with a single tap.
Background Operation
The timer continues running even if you:
- Lock your phone
- Switch to another app
- Close the Woodshedding app
What happens when you reach your target time?
- You'll receive a notification (if enabled)
- The timer continues running (in case you want to practice longer)
- You can stop anytime by tapping "Complete Session"
The app tracks your total session time, even if you practice beyond your target.
Lost Practice Feature
Lost Practice lets you manually log sessions you forgot to track. Life happens - you practiced but forgot to start the timer, or the app crashed. Instead of losing that session from your stats, you can add it retroactively.
How to use Lost Practice:
- Go to the Timer page
- Tap "Lost Practice"
- Enter the date and time of your practice session
- Set the duration and practice type
- Tap Save
Note: You can add up to 2 Lost Practice sessions per month. Just be honest about the time and date.
Troubleshooting
Why didn't my practice session save?
Sessions may not save if:
- The app crashed or your phone powered off during practice
- You chose "Discard Session" instead of "Complete Session"
- Your device ran out of storage
If you lose a session, use the Lost Practice feature to add it back.
Can I edit a session after saving it?
Currently, you cannot edit past sessions directly. If you made a mistake, you could:
- Note it for your own records
- Use a Lost Practice entry to add a corrected version (if you have entries remaining)
We're considering adding session editing in future updates.
Not receiving timer notifications?
Make sure:
- You've allowed notifications for Woodshedding in your phone's Settings
- The app has permission to send notifications
- Do Not Disturb mode isn't blocking Woodshedding notifications
Go to Settings → Notifications → Woodshedding to enable notifications.
